Their visit comes as part of an ongoing effort to build stronger political and ideological ties between the two governing parties.

Top officials from Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) are in Nairobi for a four-day visit aimed at deepening cooperation with leaders from Kenya’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

The Ugandan delegation, led by NRM Director of External Affairs Rtd Maj Awich Pollar Awich and Col Okei Rukogota of the National Leadership Institute Kyankwanzi, was received by senior UDA officials, including national treasurer Japheth Nyakundi.

Their visit comes as part of an ongoing effort to build stronger political and ideological ties between the two governing parties.

UDA, through a post on X, confirmed that the visit was arranged following an invitation extended by UDA secretary general Hassan Omar.

"NRM secretary general Rt Hon Richard Todwong is expected to join the delegation later today, May 8, 2025, for consultations with the UDA leadership," UDA said.

The visiting NRM officials were also welcomed by several UDA directors, including Daniel Kiptoo, Rob Jillo, Grace Gicovi, and Nathaniel Mongare. Discussions between the two sides are expected to cover areas of shared political interest and party development strategies.

The Nairobi meetings follow an earlier tour by UDA officials to Uganda, where they spent a week engaging with their NRM counterparts.

During that trip, UDA leaders had the opportunity to visit the NRM Leadership Academy in Kyankwanzi, a key institution for training party officials and shaping policy direction.

UDA secretary general Hassan Omar said the Ugandan tour allowed both parties to explore opportunities for collaboration and learning.

One of the key takeaways from that visit was the idea of setting up a similar leadership training centre in Kenya.

In Kampala, the UDA team was received by Uganda’s President and NRM national chairman Yoweri Museveni.

The meetings were described as friendly and constructive, laying the foundation for future engagements.

Speaking at the end of the Kampala tour, Omar said the discussions extended beyond current party cooperation and touched on the future of Uganda’s political stability.

"There should be a conversation about the post-president era, and people should start engaging their minds. What do we need to do to ensure Uganda stays on a path of continuity that is favourable to both our countries?" Omar asked.

The remarks point to a broader strategic conversation taking place between the two parties, especially as Uganda’s ruling party this year marks 39 years in power.

Museveni, who has led Uganda since 1986, remains a central figure in the region’s political landscape.
